Clinical Director Los Altos, CA & San Mateo, CA
Amaehealth
los altos, ca
Compensation: 150.000 - 200.000

Amae Health is a Series B, venture‑backed Public Benefit Corporation that delivers specialty outpatient care for people with severe mental illness. We build and operate high‑acuity, in‑person clinics nationally.

Our model integrates psychiatry, therapy, primary care, dietitians, and community support under one roof. It has proven itself as the most effective in the country, which is why we collaborate with leading health systems including NewYork‑Presbyterian, Cedars‑Sinai, Mass General Brigham, Novant Health, and CommonSpirit to extend our care to where it’s needed most.

But what makes us fundamentally different is that we are also building the science and technology layer that this field has never had. We are developing proprietary clinical protocols, designing novel measurement science, and engineering an AI data science platform purpose‑built for the complexity of severe mental illness. Every patient interaction generates data that feeds back into our protocols, our technology, and our understanding of what actually works.

We reduce hospitalizations. We improve stability. We keep people alive and in their communities. We help our members gain purpose and meaning.

The Team

We are clinicians, operators, technologists, and scientists. The people here chose Amae because the problem is hard and the stakes are real. We are not interested in incremental improvements to a broken system. We are redefining it.

Our teams work cross‑functionally because the work demands it. The psychiatrist who sees patients in the morning informs the product roadmap in the afternoon. The AI engineers who develop our technology understand the clinical complexity it needs to solve. The scientist pushing frontier research in SMI outcomes sits next to the operator who runs the clinic it measures.

Every function (finance, product, people, growth, technology) is in direct service of one thing: better outcomes for the people we serve. Everyone is on the front line, working directly alongside our clinical teams and our members.

The Opportunity

We are growing our presence in California and are looking to hire a Northern California Clinical Director to lead the care delivery teams, programs and systems that support our success. Reporting to the Regional VP, the Director is accountable for growing and supporting the Amae’s innovative SMI care model across the Bay Area market, meeting and exceeding key clinical deliverables and modeling the Amae way to our teams. As the Clinical Director, you will partner with our operational leaders to support care delivery across our Los Altos and San Mateo clinics, steering the efforts of a collaborative interdisciplinary care team that includes social workers, therapists, psychiatrists, dietitians, health and wellness coaches, and member support specialists. Your leadership will drive oversight, direction, and continuous improvement of our clinical practices.

About You

An experienced leader, you leverage your robust clinical expertise to support teams that provide care that raises the bar for patients with SMI. You don’t settle for the status quo, instead seek to develop teams that represent the gold standard within the clinical space. Your influence as the Clinic Director extends beyond administration, making a profound and positive impact on the lives of our patients. Your insights, empathy, and expertise shape the quality of care we deliver, reflecting our commitment to treating every patient as a whole person.

What You Will Do

  • Clinical Leadership: You’ll guide and support your teams in day‐to‐day management, with an eye towards scaling our unique care model without compromising quality. Your role involves crafting strategic plans to evolve current procedures, ensuring the delivery of exceptional, personalized care.
  • Direct Patient Care: This position isn’t only about leadership; you’ll be actively involved with patients. You’ll oversee admissions and directly manage the intake process, assisting in the development of individualized treatment plans and level of care transitions. You’ll have the opportunity to forge and sustain relationships with our members, their families and caregivers, and have the flexibility to conduct both individual, group, and family therapy sessions.

We pay competitively. Base salary reflects role, level, and geography. Total compensation includes valuable equity, comprehensive medical/dental/vision, PTO, parental leave, and programs built around employee well‑being. We’ll share specifics during the interview process.

What We’re Building

Most healthcare companies ask you to optimize an existing system. We’re asking you to build things that have never existed.

  • A national care delivery model engineered from the ground up for the highest‑acuity patients in behavioral health.
  • Precision medicine for SMI: collecting multimodal data across clinical, behavioral, and social dimensions to develop individualized treatment approaches for a population that has never had them.
  • A clinical operating system that synthesizes longitudinal data, real‑time patient signals, and purpose‑built clinical tools into a single decision layer. Nothing like it exists today.
  • Frontier science and measurement: defining and validating the outcomes frameworks that this field has never had. Hospitalizations avoided, days stable, functional improvement, and more. This is not incremental research. This is building the scientific foundation for an entire category of care.
  • A partnership model with the country’s leading health systems that proves coordinated SMI care can work at scale.

More About Amae

Amae , pronounced ‘Ah‑mai ’, is a Japanese concept meaning the need to be in good favor with, and the ability to depend on, the people around oneself. It reflects our core belief that a strong support system is essential to build people up, strengthen their will to carry on and even to thrive in life. This mentality applies across our whole company – from the patients we serve to the team we’re building.

What We Value

We center care in all we do. Empathy is not a brand value. It’s how we make clinical decisions, build products, and treat each other.

We challenge convention. The existing system is the problem. We question it, we test alternatives, and we move with urgency when something works.

We take the work seriously, not ourselves. High standards and humanity are not in tension. We hold a hard bar for quality while leaving room for humor and levity.

Your job isn’t done until the job is done. We close gaps, we follow through, and we don’t hide behind titles or org charts.

We win together and fail together. We own outcomes as a team. We learn fast. We don’t do blame.

We hustle with humility. Speed matters. So does integrity. We assume best intent and stay grounded in the mission.

Amae Health is an equal opportunity employer and encourages all applicants from every background and life experience to apply.
