Senior Fellows – Drawdown Oceans Program

The Drawdown Oceans Program has just been launched.It aims to further global understanding of the potential for marine solutions and drive investment and implementation in this crucial area.

The primary goals of the Drawdown Oceans program are to:

  • Create an Oceans data model that analyzes the potential for marine climate solutions to reduce emissions, sequester carbon, and improve economic and social outcomes; and, to integrate this model with existing sector models to expand the overall global systems analysis.
  • Integrate the results from the oceans model into all drawdown communications, coalitions, and curriculum efforts.
  • Regularly update the oceans model with the latest data and research to ensure its accuracy and usefulness to target audiences in perpetuity.

The result of this project will be that marine climate solutions will be known widely and publicly alongside already prominent sectors such as energy and transport, just as Project Drawdown has highlighted the impact of the agriculture and food sectors. Ultimately, this will further global understanding of the potential for marine solutions and drive investment and implementation in this crucial area.

Responsibilities

  • Revise technical reports and models authored by Drawdown research fellows.
  • Lead data collection and methodology revision in specific subject areas.
  • Develop integration models for related solutions within sectors
  • Work with a team of researchers to integrate all models into a comprehensive, global solutions model.
  • Identify and scope new solutions and coming attractions for inclusion in future publications.
  • Manage/supervise the work of Drawdown research fellows, as needed.
  • Communicate with partners and advisors to assist research, as needed.
  • Represent Project Drawdown at events and make presentations on research and findings, as needed.

Qualifications

  • Ph.D., equivalent doctoral level degree, or equivalent work experience in a field relevant to the subject area applied for. ABD candidates will be considered. If ABD, candidates will be required to complete the doctoral degree by the start date.
  • Demonstrated data modeling and model design expertise, and experience in environment, climate, finance, or interactions between human and natural systems using Excel or other modeling software. Education or experience in data analytics is a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability and commitment to conduct research and produce scholarly work.
  • Ability to effectively and patiently supervise the work of other researchers.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with other researchers while working remotely. Comfort with teleconferencing technologies. Flexibility to work with team members in different time zones.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form.
  • Experience in public speaking and public engagement.
  • A strong network in candidate’s field of expertise.

The ideal candidate will have experience in interdisciplinary science and modeling and a desire to build on this as a researcher. The candidate will also be creative in linking scholarship with practice. Candidates should be vitally interested in climate solutions.

Start date: ongoing from 06/01/2018

Expected weekly hours: 30 – 40 hours

Length of contract: 12-24 months minimum

Location: Work may be conducted remotely worldwide or on-site at the Drawdown offices in Sausalito, CA USA.

Writing Samples

All applicants should submit two writing samples, including:

  • A word an argumentative essay or op-ed on a subject of your choice that demonstrates an ability to make a focused argument in a clear, convincing, and accessible way. This writing sample is evaluated for evidence of critical thinking and general writing skills.
  • A research paper of up to 10 pages. This does not need to have been published, but should demonstrate an ability to research and analyze a subject in more depth. It is recommended, but not required, that the topic of the research paper be relevant to the Project Drawdown’s mission. Papers utilizing quantitative and qualitative analysis of climate solutions are particularly encouraged.

SUMMARY

The Policy and Development Director will be based out of the Sacramento office and is responsible for leading the Foundation’s local, state, and federal legislative and policy advocacy efforts, including the implementation and oversight of effective policy-focused engagement by staff. The position is a member of the Senior Management Team and is responsible for establishing and maintaining relationships with elected and appointed officials, policy organizations, and community partners while monitoring the status of legislative and policy proposals that impact the Foundation’s ability to promote the health and wellbeing of all Californians. In addition, the Director will help identify, develop and/or advance funding opportunities with public and private sources, including foundations, government, for-profit business partners, and individual donors.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Policy & Advocacy

  • Support the Executive Management Team to develop an annual policy priority framework while preserving sufficient flexibility to respond to emergent issues.
  • Provide leadership and guidance for executive, administrative and program team efforts to navigate and influence policy and administrative systems at local, state, and federal levels.
  • Collaborate with community partners and other advocates to design and implement policy strategies to advance approved policy priorities.
  • Educate and update Foundation and Center staff on policy reform opportunities and collaborate with program leadership to plan and execute responses in specific project areas.
  • Cultivate and maintain strategic institutional and management team relationships with policymakers and government leaders.
  • On an ongoing basis, review, refine and update the Foundation’s annual public policy framework to ensure relevance and responsiveness.
  • Elevate and amplify the Foundation and Center’s advocacy and system change efforts by organizing and participating in public education activities and supporting the development program staff testimony.

Development

  • Grow and maintain a portfolio of Foundation partnerships with executive and senior management teams and cultivate new strategic relationships.
  • Generate quarterly philanthropic reports and track metrics on all development and fundraising activities.
  • Track developing local, state, and federal health initiatives to identify potential funding partnerships.
  • Devise and execute media and communications strategies for advocacy campaigns in coordination with the Communications Department.

The CRNA will use high patient acuity allowing them to fully implement their clinical skills and education, and continue to expand within any area of expertise that may be desired. The schedule is a dream! Monday - Friday, at least one day off during the week. The sites run under a waterfall schedule. If you are first in, you are first out. If you are last in, you have the next day off. Really 3.5 days per week, averaging 24-28 hours per week.

Duties/Responsibilities.

  • Examine patients’ history for allergies or illnesses that would affect anesthesia.
  • Evaluate and prepare patients, provide education about surgeries/procedures and recovery, and discuss possible side effects.
  • Liaise with other members of the healthcare team such as MDs, nurses, and other healthcare workers.
  • Determine appropriate amount, type, and method of anesthesia administration.
  • Perform anesthetics; administer medication to patients for pain relief.
  • Supervise and assist other CRNAs.
  • Oversee recovery and pain management of patients.
  • Inform patients of post-surgical and pain management procedures.
  • Assist in patient procedure preparation.
  • Provide support to other healthcare teams.

Education and Experience.

POSITION TITLE: Chief Nursing Officer

DESCRIPTION OF POSITION:
Organizes and administers areas of Nursing Services to attain the facility's objectives established by the governing authority. The Chief Nursing Officer maintains knowledge of, participates in further training provided, and understands the potential risks regarding occupational health hazards (e.g. bloodborne pathogen exposures).
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Organizes programs, policies and procedures that are developed to assess, evaluate and meet the needs of patients of inpatient psychiatric services, psychiatric outpatient clinics and transitional psychiatric programs
  • Plans, supervises and coordinate(s) care given by RN, LVN, LPT, and other mental health workers
  • Plans and assigns staffing rations based on patient needs, acuity, staff competency and regulatory requirements
  • Implements standards of nursing practice in the behavioral healthcare setting, annually reviewing and revising as necessary to reflect changes in nursing practice
  • Addresses and supports cultural practices as long as such practices do not harm others or interfere with the planned course of therapy
  • Clear, concise and current written policies and procedures are available to assist the staff and minimize risk factors
  • Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors
  • Supports and maintains a culture of safety and quality
  • Serves as the internal Infection Control liaison to the corporate Infection Prevention consultant
  • Perform and direct surveillance and related activities, including the investigation of clusters of infections above expected levels and single cases of unusual health care associated infections, ongoing collection and review of data as well as required follow-up and collaboration/cooperation with the Infection Preventionist

  • Initiates and participates in problem solving, policy forming conferences for psychiatric patient care services. Maintains close coordination with all departments to ensure continuity and collaboration of services
  • Participates with the Governing Body, management, medical staff and clinical leaders in the facility's decision-making process
  • Plans and recommends to CEO new facilities or equipment or modifications thereto needed to provide patient care
  • Serves as a member of professional staff committees in matters pertaining to patient care
  • Participates in the Executive Finance, Board of Trustees and Medical Staff departmental meetings
  • Plans and coordinates with the Chief Financial Officer, utilizing the respective service managers for planning the budgeting requirements for staff, performance of work, supplies and equipment
  • Responsible for maintaining appropriate staffing levels based on patient volumes and acuity. Ensures payroll accuracy and approvals on a weekly basis.
  • Responsible for cost controls to ensure maximum effectiveness of funds expended from approved departmental budgets
  • Reviews and approves invoices for expenses as needed
  • Implements an effective, ongoing program to measure, assess and improve the quality of nursing care delivered to psychiatric patients
  • Ensures each nursing department's performance improvement program interfaces with and supports the nursing department performance improvement program
  • Assures that nursing leaders review monthly performance improvement compliance with established indicators and sees that corrective actions are taken when negative outcomes are identified

Requirements
Knowledge and Experience:
  • A registered nurse who has a master's degree in psychiatric or mental health nursing, or its equivalent from a school of nursing accredited by the National League for Nursing, or be qualified by education and experience in the care of the mentally ill
  • Seven years of experience working as a psych nurse, five of which are in a Director-level or higher role required
  • Current California State License as a Registered Nurse
  • Current CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) certification (or obtained within 30 days of hire)
  • Verbal de-escalation and physical intervention program as approved by the CNO.)
  • English proficiency required.

  • Maintains confidentiality of patients at all times
