Basic Purpose:

Positions in the Systems Software Engineer job family are responsible for evaluating, selecting, installing, and maintaining enterprise operating systems and technical applications for assigned platforms including enterprise servers and networks and for serving as a technical resource on enterprise hardware issues. Incumbents interact with technical and business customers to provide training and expertise in the design of specific applications to ensure the optimization of the platforms or technologies involved. Comments (Level Descriptions):

Systems Software Engineer I

This is the proficiency level where incumbents apply their basic skills and expertise, typically with a specific operating system and platform. They perform routine assignments to complete system change and modification requests and assist higher level staff in all aspects of maintaining, updating, documenting, and monitoring the operating systems. Incumbents also provide continuing support for their assigned operating system, trouble‑shooting and resolving common immediate problems. Work is assigned to provide a broader knowledge of the technology supported and to develop a high level of creative problem‑solving in preparation for qualification at the next level of the family.

Systems Software Engineer II

This is the career level where incumbents are fully knowledgeable in the operating system and platform‑supported and work as a part of a team to develop or install new systems software or supporting applications. The emphasis at this level is the incumbent’s ability to identify and resolve all but the most unusual operating systems problems quickly and with dispatch. While at this level, incumbents are increasing their knowledge and expertise in a complex operating system and platform or are expanding their capabilities in a second technology. They may also have specific assignments in areas such as performance tuning, security, disaster recovery, and the like to broaden their overall knowledge of their assigned technology.

Senior Systems Software Engineer

This is the specialist level where incumbents have full and specialized knowledge in their assigned operating system(s). This may be a single, highly complex system or multiple, less complex systems. Incumbents have primary accountability for the installation, maintenance, and operating efficiency of their assigned systems. They work with a high degree of independence, providing technical leadership and work review for less experienced staff. Individuals at this level are able to identify and resolve the most complex system‑related problems and deal directly with key vendor service representatives. Their work is characterized by the rapid application of technical knowledge to increase the efficiency and operation of the platform(s) supported. Incumbents may also be a Subject Matter Expert for their assigned system serving as third‑tier support for operating problems and technical consultant on complex applications development projects. Lead Systems Software Engineer

This is the leadership level where incumbents are recognized experts in a complex operating system and related areas such as network or database applications. Incumbents lead projects for major upgrades or installations, providing technical guidance and work direction to technical staff and ensuring that projects are completed smoothly and on time. Incumbents may also be a Subject Matter Expert for an enterprise‑wide system, assisting in technology planning and serving as a technical consultant on enterprise applications development project teams. They may also have formal leadership responsibilities for enterprise‑wide functions such as security, disaster recovery, and the like.

  • Report Security Patch compliance.
  • Perform daily system monitoring, verifying the integrity and availability of all hardware, server resources, systems and key processes, reviewing system and application logs, and verifying completion of scheduled jobs such as backups.
  • Perform regular security monitoring to identify any possible intrusions.
  • Perform daily backup operations, ensuring all required file systems and system data are successfully backed up to the appropriate media, recovery tapes or disks are created, and media is recycled and sent off site as necessary.
  • Perform regular file archival and purge as necessary.
  • Create, change, and delete user accounts per request as necessary.
  • Provide Tier III/other support per request from various constituencies. Investigate and troubleshoot issues.
  • Repair and recover from hardware or software failures. Coordinate and communicate with impacted constituencies.
  • Maintenance
  • Apply OS patches and upgrades on a regular basis, and upgrade administrative tools and utilities. Configure/add new services as necessary.
  • Manage existing and/or deploy new instances of Jira, Git, LDAP, Jenkins, VMWare environments.
  • Upgrade and configure system software that supports infrastructure applications or Asset Management applications per project or operational needs.

  • After hours and weekend support and/or alternative work schedules are required at various points in the year

Requirements

  • Especially high skill level of VMware admin and management, also including but not limiting , Jenkins, GIT, DevOps tool administration
  • Network equipment management, Cisco equipment preferred,
  • 5+ years of system administration experience in Linux environments and proficient in tasks such as shell scripting, creating corn jobs, analyzing log files, managing user accounts and groups, configuring iptables, and setting up mail services.
  • Proven ability to multi-task.
  • Ability to effectively communicate (verbal and written correspondence) in a professional and courteous manner with technical and non-technical personnel.
  • CompTIA Security+ (SY0-301) or other DoD 8570.1 Workplace Improvement Plan IAT Level II compliant certification required (or equivalent experience).
  • Able to lift 50 lbs.
  • Able to move servers to and from main DC to the colocation and labs
  • Install new hardware or migrate existing servers (rack and stack)

Pay range is $30-$38 per hour with full benefits available, including paid time off, medical/dental/vision/life insurance, 401K, parental leave, and more. DSAI seeks a Scientific Software Engineer with a strong academic background and relevant experience in industry. The successful candidates will work at the cutting edge of modern science within the new Scientific Software Engineering Center (SSEC) at Johns Hopkins University (JHU). The Center is part of the Virtual Institute for Scientific Software (VISS), launched by Schmidt Futures, a philanthropic initiative founded by Eric and Wendy Schmidt. VISS will address the growing demand for high‑quality professional software engineers who can build dynamic, scalable, open software to facilitate accelerated scientific discovery across fields. The SSEC will be hosted by the Institute of Data Intensive Engineering and Science (IDIES) at JHU within DSAI, a new pan‑institutional initiative at Johns Hopkins to advance artificial intelligence and its applications, in part through investments in the software engineering, data science, and machine learning space. The SSEC engineers will be at the forefront of modern data‑intensive science, where high‑level software is rapidly becoming the key ingredient for success. The DSAI initiative includes the build‑out of a substantive and professional‑scale software engineering capability, and a dramatic increase in infrastructure, both in hardware and in personnel.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • The successful candidates will be given a choice of ground‑breaking research projects that need advanced software solutions requiring expertise in software engineering not commonly found in scientific collaborations.
  • Projects may require the creation of AI/ML solutions using the latest DNN libraries trained on state‑of‑the‑art hardware.
  • Projects may also involve analysis of massive data sets either in the cloud or on premises.
  • They may require creation of software pipelines for processing of real‑time high‑frequency data processing workflows and may need the design of complex database models for storing and disseminating scientific data sets.
  • Some projects may require deep engagement, possibly leading to co‑authorship on scientific publications, while others may involve a more casual consulting engagement.
  • They may require software solutions developed from scratch or refactoring existing solutions to make them conform to industry standards (quality, reusability, robustness, portability, documentation, etc.).
  • It is a high‑level goal of the SSEC to translate the efforts for the individual projects into frameworks and template patterns for sustainable scientific infrastructure benefiting future projects.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s in a Quantitative Discipline, e.g., Computer Science, Engineering, Astrophysics, Bioinformatics with strong scientific computing and/or mathematics background.

This role partners closely with a Senior Data Analyst and cross-functional business teams to transform data into clear, actionable insights. The focus of this position is on dashboard development, report maintenance, and data storytelling rather than advanced data science or model development.

The ideal candidate enjoys working with data to uncover trends, support decision-making, and enhance customer and business visibility. Key Responsibilities
Support the Senior Data Analyst with data collection, validation, and preparation from relational data sources.

Maintain, enhance, and optimize existing dashboards and reports to ensure accuracy and usability.

Design and develop new visual reports and dashboards that clearly communicate trends, performance metrics, and business insights.

Partner with marketing and business stakeholders to support analysis related to customer behavior, acquisition, retention, product performance, and revenue opportunities.

Assist with ad-hoc analysis requests, translating business questions into meaningful visual outputs.

Ensure data presented to stakeholders is consistent, reliable, and aligned with business definitions.

Contribute to documentation and reporting standards to promote consistency and ease of use across the organization.

Support a culture of data-driven decision-making by delivering insights in a clear, concise, and compelling manner.

Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in a quantitative or analytical discipline such as statistics, mathematics, economics, marketing analytics, or a related field.

3–5 years of professional experience in a data analysis, reporting, or analytics-focused role.

Hands-on experience using Tableau for dashboard creation, reporting, and data visualization (1–3 years).

Working knowledge of relational databases and structured data concepts.

Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and adapt in a fast-paced environment.

Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and problem-solving skills.

Excellent communication skills with the ability to present data insights to non-technical audiences.

Preferred Experience
Prior experience supporting analytics in banking, financial services, or a regulated industry.

Exposure to marketing analytics, customer experience reporting, or performance measurement frameworks.
