Overview

Reporting to the EVP General Counsel, the Real Estate and Development Counsel will lead proactive, strategic legal work that supports our portfolio, government partnerships, and growth. Unlike a reactive operational role, this position is focused on the universal documents that govern our communities, the negotiation of those documents with government stakeholders, real estate transactions across our portfolio, and legal support for development and new project onboarding. This role works alongside the Property Management Counsel, Contracts & Compliance Counsel, and paralegal team.

What you will do

  • Drafts, reviews, negotiates, and manages universal legal documents, including the Universal Lease (UL), Community Guidelines, Operations, Maintenance and Management Plans (OMMPs), and Facilities Maintenance Plans (FMPs).
  • Negotiates document terms and amendments with government stakeholders, including Military Housing Offices, the service branches, and the Department of Defense.
  • Supports real estate transactions across the portfolio, including parcel returns, document amendments, licenses, easements, rights of entry, access agreements, and related contracts.
  • Advises on development and construction legal matters as the portfolio grows, including new construction, renovation, and infrastructure projects.
  • Supports growth initiatives and new project onboarding from a legal perspective, including diligence, structuring, and document implementation.
  • Monitors and implements evolving MHPI statutory and regulatory requirements, including NDAA provisions, GAO recommendations, and DOD IG findings.
  • Develops and improves operational infrastructure, policies, and legal protocols related to health and safety, maintenance, environmental risk, and risk mitigation.
  • Advises on energy, utilities, and environmental compliance matters, including utility allowance programs, energy procurement, and environmental diligence.
  • Coordinates with and manages outside counsel on specialized matters within assigned areas, ensuring cost-effective, high-quality support.
  • Partners with Property Management Counsel on document interpretation issues that arise from field operations, and translate lessons learned into improvements to universal documents.
  • Supports interactions with congressional staff, GAO auditors, and DOD IG investigators in coordination with the General Counsel and government relations teams.

Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor Degree (JD) from an accredited U.S. law school. Required
  • Active bar membership in at least one U.S. jurisdiction (any state); willingness and ability to obtain additional registrations as required. Required
  • 5-10 years of experience in real estate, transactional, or regulatory law. Required
  • Experience with government contracts, public-private partnerships, or government-regulated real estate is strongly preferred. Preferred
  • Demonstrated experience drafting and negotiating complex operational and transactional documents. Required

Compensation

We are committed to offering competitive and equitable compensation. The hiring range for this position is generally between $143,000 - $185,600, exclusive of fringe benefits or potential bonuses. This position is also eligible for a performance bonus. Final salaries will be determined based on factors such as geographic location, skills, education, licenses, certifications, and/or experience. Hiring at the top of the range is reserved for exceptionally qualified candidates.

Job Description

The Practice Innovation Attorney (Corporate) will serve as a strategic partner driving innovation, operational improvement, and technology-enabled transformation across core workflows, with a focus on artificial intelligence and emerging legal technologies. This role will work closely with attorneys, practice leadership, knowledge management, practice innovation, IT, and other business teams to identify high-value opportunities to improve legal service delivery, enhance efficiency, and support exceptional client service. The Practice Innovation Attorney will lead the development and implementation of practical, responsible, and scalable solutions leveraging Artificial Intelligence, document automation, workflow redesign, and knowledge tools. This is a practice-embedded role that combines legal experience, knowledge management, product and process thinking and project leadership. The ideal candidate will bring strong practice knowledge, demonstrated experience with AI and legal technology innovation, and the ability to influence adoption across a sophisticated legal environment.

Responsibilities

Practice-Focused Innovation Leadership

  • Lead innovation and knowledge management efforts for the Corporate practice.
  • Partner with practice leadership and key stakeholders to identify and advance opportunities to improve legal service delivery, workflows, and client experience.

Workflow Design and Process Improvement

  • Evaluate and redesign Corporate workflows to improve efficiency, consistency, and scalability.
  • Develop standardized tools and materials such as playbooks, templates, checklists, clause libraries, and decision trees.
  • Collaborate with Practice Analytics and Pricing, Practice Support, and Knowledge teams to enhance matter planning and delivery.

Legal Technology, AI, and Product Development

  • Help identify and implement legal technology solutions that support the Corporate practice, including automation, AI, contract analysis, workflow tools, and dashboards.
  • Develop practical AI use cases, workflows, prompts, and guidance for legal service delivery in Corporate
  • Prototype and refine solutions based on user feedback to support adoption and impact.
  • Partner with firm technology, innovation, and KM teams to ensure alignment with platforms, governance, and security standards.
  • Track emerging legal technology and market trends to inform practice transformation.

Change Management, Training, and Adoption

  • Drive adoption of new tools, workflows, and ways of working across the Corporate practice.
  • Design and deliver training, workshops, and practical enablement materials.
  • Act as a visible champion for innovation and continuous improvement.
  • Support pilots, user feedback, and iterative development to strengthen engagement and adoption.

Project Management and Strategic Execution

  • Lead innovation initiatives from concept through implementation.
  • Define priorities, goals, success metrics, timelines, risks, and resource needs.
  • Track and communicate project progress, outcomes, adoption, and ROI to firm and practice leadership.
  • Contribute to broader firm innovation efforts and promote cross-functional best practices.

Client and Business Development Support

  • Articulate the firm’s innovation capabilities and technology-enabled delivery model within Corporate.
  • Develop case studies and materials that demonstrate impact.
  • Help lawyers present technology-enabled solutions to clients in a practical manner.
  • Support client-facing innovation efforts, including collaborating on pitches, RFPs, presentations, and showcases.

Qualifications

  • JD required.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience as a practicing attorney in an Am Law 200 firm or three (3) years of relevant legal innovation, knowledge management, or legal technology experience or a combination of three (3) years of practicing and legal innovation experience required.
  • Must have experience managing projects and coordinating across cross-functional teams.
  • Proven ability to build credibility with partners, lawyers, and business professionals and to influence change in a professional services setting.
