Senior Software Engineer - Wallet/Authentication Platform

Own end-to-end design, development, and deployment of wallet authentication features.

Location: Mountain View, California

Compensation: $190,978 - 221,668 USD / year

About The Role

Senior Software Engineer - Wallet/Authentication Platform

Mountain View, California, United States

Company Overview

ID.me is the next-generation digital identity wallet that simplifies how individuals securely prove their identity online. Consumers can verify their identity with ID.me once and seamlessly log in across websites without having to create a new login and verify their identity again. Over 152 million users experience streamlined login and identity verification with ID.me at 20 federal agencies, 45 state government agencies, and 70+ healthcare organizations. More than 600+ consumer brands use ID.me to verify communities and user segments to honor service and build more authentic relationships. ID.me's technology meets the federal standards for consumer authentication set by the Commerce Department and is approved as a NIST 800-63-3 IAL2 / AAL2 credential service provider by the Kantara Initiative. ID.me is committed to 'No Identity Left Behind' to enable all people to have a secure digital identity.

ID.me is a full-time, in-office culture. Unless a specific job description explicitly states otherwise, all roles are on-site five days per week at one of our offices in McLean, VA; Mountain View, CA; New York City, NY; or Tampa, FL. Certain roles — such as field-based sales or other remote-by-design positions — may have different work arrangements as noted in their individual postings.

At ID.me, we embrace the thoughtful use of AI tools in our daily work and there are even occasions where we leverage AI in our hiring process. However, during the interview process, we want to understand your individual skills and experiences. Therefore, we have guidelines on how AI can be appropriately used during your application and interviews which can be found here.

Role Overview

ID.me is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join the Wallet/Authentication Platform team, where we build the core sign-in, registration, and account management experiences that over 140 million members rely on to access the ID.me identity wallet.

Authentication is the front door to ID.me. Every member journey begins with creating, signing into, or managing their Wallet. Our team owns sign-in, registration, MFA, account recovery, password reset, and MyWallet, ensuring members can securely access their verified identity across 20 federal agencies, 44 state governments, 66 healthcare organizations, and hundreds of consumer brands.

As a Senior Software Engineer, you will work end-to-end across our authentication stack — designing and shipping features that balance security, usability, and trust at scale. You bring strong product instincts and technical depth, operating with a high degree of independence while partnering closely with Product, Design, and Security. Your work sits at the intersection of identity, security, and consumer experience, directly shaping how millions of people prove and access who they are online.

This position will work from our Mountain View, CA office five days per week.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build & Ship Authentication Features: Design, build, maintain, and improve the ID.me Wallet authentication experience — sign-in, registration, MFA, account recovery, password reset, and MyWallet. Independently drive medium-to-large features end-to-end from design through deployment, collaborating closely with Product, Design, and Security to translate requirements into well-tested, production-ready code.
  • Security, Risk & Reliability: Own and evolve real-time risk and abuse detection across authentication flows — detecting and mitigating credential attacks, account takeover, and abuse while preserving a low-friction experience for legitimate members. Apply security best practices as a first-class concern in every feature you ship, and help raise the bar for authentication reliability, observability, and incident response.
  • Code Quality & Engineering Craft: Write high-quality, maintainable code with strong test coverage, following team best practices around code reviews, CI/CD, and documentation. Contribute to codebase health by identifying and addressing technical debt and improving shared components.
  • Third-Party & Internal Integrations: Integrate with MFA providers, email/SMS delivery services, internal identity services, and downstream relying parties. Proactively raise issues or opportunities discovered during integration work.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with Product, Design, Security, Identity, and adjacent engineering teams to deliver cohesive auth experiences. Participate actively in planning, retrospectives, and cross-team discussions — bringing your perspective to help shape the team's roadmap.
  • Mentorship & Leadership: Provide technical guidance to junior engineers through code reviews, design discussions, and pairing. Help establish and reinforce team standards and best practices.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience).
  • 5+ years of professional software development experience with a strong emphasis on full-stack web engineering.
  • 1+ years of experience with AI-assisted development tooling (e.g., Claude Code, Cursor) demonstrated by at least one year of daily use, in addition to a commitment to an AI-first engineering culture that leverages these tools to maximize code quality, test coverage, and engineering velocity.
  • 3+ years of experience in Java and Spring Boot, with at least 3 years of hands‑on experience building and operating production web services.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with a track record of working effectively across Product, Design, and Engineering.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently own and ship complex features end-to-end with minimal oversight.
  • Experience with authentication and identity standards such as OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect (OIDC), SAML, or FIDO2/WebAuthn — hands‑on implementation experience is a strong plus.
  • Experience with or exposure to Identity Provider (IdP) or Identity and Access Management (IAM) systems and how they integrate with relying parties.
  • Familiarity with security best practices for credential handling — password storage, session management, token issuance, and rate limiting.
  • Experience building or contributing to fraud detection, real-time risk engines, or abuse mitigation systems.
  • Experience with React or other modern frontend frameworks for building authentication user experiences.
  • Comfort working in a fast-moving product environment with iterative releases and A/B testing.
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, automated testing frameworks, and performance profiling tools.
  • Startup or high-growth company experience with a strong bias toward execution and ownership.

Secure Every Identity, from AI to Human

Identity is the key to unlocking the potential of AI. Okta secures AI by building the trusted, neutral infrastructure that enables organizations to safely embrace this new era. This work requires a relentless drive to solve complex challenges with real-world stakes. We are looking for builders and owners who operate with speed and urgency and execute with excellence.

This is an opportunity to do career-defining work. We're all in on this mission. If you are too, let's talk.

The Auth0 Team

Auth0 is an easy-to-implement authentication and authorization platform designed by developers for developers. We make access to applications safe, secure, and seamless for the more than 100 million daily logins around the world. Our modern approach to identity enables this Tier-Ø global service to deliver convenience, privacy, and security so customers can focus on innovation.

This team focuses on providing tenant-level protections to our customers, at scale. From bot detection to brute-force to suspicious IP throttling and beyond, this team often provides the first line of defense for Auth0 customers.

At Okta, we’re building the next generation of authentication for the GenAI era. We’re looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join the AI Agentic Experience team at Auth0. This role is pivotal in extending and complementing our Auth for GenAI offering by building the infrastructure, tooling, and developer experiences that empower both human developers and AI agents to build secure, intelligent applications.

Auth0 Emerging Tech is the Engineering organization where we take care of the hottest technology out there: we ship fast, we don't break things. We are a dynamic and collaborative distributed and diverse team. We value ownership, learning and innovation.

This is an ideal role for an engineer who enjoys building for other engineers, working across stacks, and shaping the future of AI enablement in production systems. You'll collaborate across engineering, product, and security teams to drive meaningful improvements in developer tooling, agent authentication, orchestration frameworks, and real-world demos.

What you will be doing:

  • Design and Build Developer Tooling that helps developers secure and manage infrastructure like MCP servers
  • Build Demo Applications that showcase secure, identity-powered AI use cases in real-world environments
  • Contribute to Open Source Projects , both within Auth0 and across the broader AI + identity ecosystem
  • Write and Maintain High-Quality Documentation including API references, quickstarts, and best practices for both developers and AI-native tooling (e.g., llm.txt)
  • Drive Integration with Emerging AI Frameworks by creating adapters, utilities, and interfaces for agent runtimes and orchestration layers
  • Collaborate with Design, Product, and Security teams to align on developer needs, roadmap direction, and compliance requirements
  • Mentor and Support Other Engineers , setting strong examples in code quality, testing practices, and architectural thinking
  • Influence Engineering Standards by leading design discussions and contributing to team-wide architectural decisions
  • Ensure Resilience and Security of systems involved in agent-to-agent or model-to-service communication

You Might Be a Good Fit If You

  • 5+ years of experience in software engineering with a proven track record in building tools, frameworks, or platforms for other developers
  • Proficiency in JavaScript/TypeScript, Golang and/or Python, and the ability to move fluidly between front-end and back-end contexts
  • Experience working with LLM APIs, agent runtimes, orchestration layers, or prompt pipelines
  • Familiarity with authentication and authorization systems, especially standards like OAuth2, OIDC, and JWT
  • Demonstrated experience leading architecture and design efforts for scalable, production-grade systems
  • Comfort contributing to and maintaining open source projects and engaging with developer communities
  • A passion for documentation as part of the developer experience—NOT just writing code, but making it understandable and usable
  • Ability to thrive in highly collaborative environments with cross-functional stakeholders

Technologies You May Work With

  • Languages : JavaScript, TypeScript, Python
  • Frameworks : React, Next.js, FastAPI
  • AI Ecosystem : Model APIs, orchestration runtimes, prompt management systems, agent toolkits
  • Auth0 Stack : Token Vault, Async Authorization, Fine-Grained Authorization (FGA)

Why You'll Love It Here

This is a team working at the edge of what identity means in a world of AI agents. You'll have real ownership of hard, unsolved problems, backed by Okta's platform, Auth0's developer relationships, and a team that values technical depth and customer impact in equal measure.

You'll help shape the product, not just implement a backlog. You'll work with people who care about getting the details right. And you'll be building something that matters to the developers and organizations trying to do AI responsibly.
